The tap water in Southern California, where we live, contains a particularly high concentration of calcium and magnesium—the primary components of lime, also known as water hardness. This is referred to as hard water. Hard water causes dry skin, creates scale buildup in plumbing and water heaters, and leaves stains on bathtubs, sinks, and toilets. It also prevents detergent from dissolving properly, resulting in a significant waste of water and soap during bathing, laundry, and dishwashing. A water softener is a scientific system, also known as a hard water softening device, that uses an ion exchange resin to adsorb and remove these metallic mineral ions, transforming hard water into smooth, soft water.
